The other day me and Sammy http://sammy-jo-tawn.blogspot.co.uk/ decided to do a stop motion exercise because we are interested in stop motion, using the stop motion puppets. First of all we planned out what we wanted to do and came up with two characters annoying each other then one overpowers and becomes dominant over the other one. In this animation we wanted to add comedy value to it to make it funny to watch so by doing we added in sound effects using voice that are weird and comical.
Hi my name is Hannah, I am recent graduate at Falmouth University, who studied Animation and Visual Effects. As now discovering a passion for Prop Making and Set Design, these blog posts will show my experiences.

Bird Animatic
This year i chose to do pre-production rather the post. The first thing we had to do was to form a group and for me i was working with sammy, vicky and eline. For this project we had to come up with a story involving cards that involved a phrase, a genre and a person. For our group we got 'spill the beans' for our phrase. The genre was 'soap' and the person was 'Beryl Markham.'
So first of all we researched and found out that 'Beryl Markham,' was a rebellious woman from the Victorian era, who was caught up with drugs and affairs and was the first to fly across the atlantic. Beryl spent most of her childhood in Africa and loved the african lifestyle of hunting and being part of the natives. So she was surely disappointed when she had to move to england because her mother disliked Africa. So our next plan was to come up with idea in brainstorming session with the rest of my group and be ready to pitch to the tutors and rest of the class.
Our idea was about a girl born in Africa with English parents who are protective and controlling over Beryl. Then one day her parents decide that the family should move back to England, taking Beryl away from the lifestyle she had in Africa that she truly loved. When Beryl realises that she doesnt fit into the English lifestyle she decides to return to her homeland of Africa. To do this she needs to learn how to fly. So she sets off on her mission to try and discover the secrets of flying from the birds more specfic from the fastest bird the Gannet. To do this she catches the birds to get to the Gannet but when she reaches to the Gannet he said it was impossible for her to fly unless she had wings. Distraught as she was the Gannet symphasises with her and gathers up the birds of England so they can take her back to Africa, where she can be herself again.
To make this story come to life we made a storyboard by drawing a section each to then later form an animatic, which sammy made on Premiere with the help of the rest of us giving her sound effects to help the story.
This animatic is what you see below on my blog:

Changes to a possible funny for 15 background
This is the same designed background for the funny for 15 project but I made some changes by changing the overall colour to it by making it a lighter grey because other members in my group felt that it should be a similar colours to the robot characters. However for the final decision in my opinion it could be too much of the same colour and you will loose the characters in the background.
This the background with the army of robot characters in it to see what the full animation would look like.

An updated background for the funny for 15 project
This is an updated background for the funny for 15 project because when i consulted with the rest of the group they told me to add more perspective and to make it look like a hangar. So thats what i tried to do and tried different colours because i thought that because the robots are grey the background should be different to stand out more and not the original background, which was grey. This background was done in photoshop aswell.

Concept Art For Pre Production
For this task we got given four cards again, but this time we had tell a story through concept art. The four cards I got given were; the artist Edward Ardizzone, the setting is at hairdressers, aim/look at pre-school and my character is a greengrocer.
So firstly I research the artist to get an understanding of his style for me to be working in. When researching him I came to like his style because he works in watercolour especially for his backgrounds, which I like. Then I was coming up with an idea for my story.
The pictures below are the art style of Edward Ardizzone:
My story idea is a local greengrocer going to the hairdressers to get a haircut. But this hairdressers is no ordinary hairdressers, the hairdresser cuts the customers hair into shapes of fruit and vegetables.
These are my concept designs below in working progress trying to capture the artist style but keeping characters simple with bold bright colours to attract the age of pre-school children.

Editing Workshop
Yesterday I had an editing workshop where I learnt how to use an editing software called Avid, which is a software that a lot of industry people use because find it easier than Final Cut or Premiere Pro.

Pre production
So far in this project I have storyboard these frames below and helped out in the animatic by adding in sound effects to make our animatic come more alive, such as the African sound, bird sounds, whoosh and thud sounds, countryside sounds and sea sounds.
Life drawing Year 2
These drawings have come from my 1st life drawing session in year 2, focusing on the weight of drawing and experimenting with different materials such as charcoal, pastel and chalk.

Year 2 beginning projects funny for 15/ pre production story
The beginning of this year we got given two projects, the funny for 15 project our story is an army of robots insanely laughing. So far we are at the animatic stage to get the structure of what our animation is going to look like.
For our other project we have to have a strong story so far we are at the stage of that we have our idea and about to storyboard. Our idea is basically a girl who wants to fly and return to her homeland of Africa. So she sets off on a mission to discovers the secret of flight from the fastest bird in England, the gannet.
Background designs I have done for funny for 15
These designs I did I drew and then painted using watercolours. Then I scanned these drawings into photoshop to add effects and adjust the colour to make the backgrounds stand out. Also I wanted my backgrounds to have depth so it creates an environment to set the scene for my animation. For my backgrounds I tried to keep a similar style to the characters to keep within the style of animation.
Animatic
Here is our animatic for our funny for 15. This animatic is a quick taster of what our animation is going to look like. Our style is in 2D and most likely going to be done in flash because from the design below the characters have already been done in flash by Katie.
